KVUE: Video Games Used to Treat Wetting

Children’s Urology is using an innovative approach to treating voiding dysfunction…video games!

Pediatric urologist, Dr. Leslie McQuiston, and nurse practitioner, Amanda Ramos-Hodges, are the medical professionals behind the Children’s Urology program that is helping kids with voiding dysfunction, also known as urinary incontinence.

In an interview with KVUE, the two explained  the application of video games in resolving embarrassing wetting or other urinary issues related to the pelvic floor.

Commented Amy, “The kids with incontinence issues — their problem more so deals with their inability to relax.”

“So the challenge was  looking at a way to help children identify muscles that they didn’t even know that they had,” said  Dr. McQuiston.

Children are given a series of exercises to work their pelvic floor region. After those muscles are strengthened, the video games are initiated.

“Participation on the part of the child is so critical when it comes to this stuff,” continued Dr. McQuiston. “Having something we can sell to a 5-year-old or a 14-year-old is really important.”

When children do not void (use the bathroom) properly and hold their urine for long periods of time, leakage of urine, pain with urination and recurrent urinary tract infections can occur. Pelvic floor therapy helps train children in proper toileting techniques.
