Eeew…don’t catch the flu!

It’s the time of year we all dread, flu season is here. Help your little ones from falling prey to the virus by getting their annual flu shot.

New and different strains of the flu virus appear each year, so it is important to get vaccinated annually. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children who are six months of age or older get the vaccine. But it’s not just kids that should get immunized – parents and caregivers of young children should also get flu shots.

Here are some symptoms to be on the lookout for this year: fever, chills, aches, coughing, and vomiting. Getting the flu can also make other existing medical conditions worse and cause serious threat to those with weakened immune systems including the elderly, pregnant women, and extremely young children.

The flu is spread through the air by coughing and sneezing, and by contaminated surfaces frequently touched by kids such as doorknobs, books, toys and other classroom or household items.

Frequent hand-washing, limiting exposure to sick kiddos, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home from school if necessary can all help reduce spreading the virus.

Still, the single best method of prevention is getting a flu shot.
