Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common among children. In fact, by age five about 8% of girls and about 1-2% of boys have had at least one. In a previous blog, we covered the basics of UTIs: what they are, signs and symptoms, and different treatment options. Now, we are here to give you some tips to help you prevent your child from developing a UTI.
- Frequent diaper changes.
- Good hygiene after every bowl movement.
- Wiping front to rear (especially for girls).
- Don’t “hold it” when they have to urinate.
- Relax and take their time when urinating.
- Avoid bubble baths and strong soaps.
- Wear cotton underwear and panties.
- Drink plenty of fluids and empty the bladder often.
Urinary tract infections are very treatable, if caught early. If you think your child might be suffering from a UTI, contact your pediatrician or make an appointment with Children’s Urology by calling (512) 472-6134.
