Children’s Urology Physicians Head to Guatemala with Surgical Global Outreach Program

AUSTIN, TEXAS – (April 1 , 2014) Dr. George Seremetis and Dr. Danielle Sweeney, pediatric urologists with Children’s Urology, will travel to Guatemala on April 26th as part of the Dell Children’s Surgical Global Outreach (DCSGO).

During their week-long outreach trip, they plan to perform approximately 50-60 surgeries to treat various pediatric urologic conditions.

Dell Children’s Surgical Global Outreach is a new group of surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, technicians, pediatric medical support and volunteers who goal is to bring surgical care to under-served children in other countries.

The Dell Children’s Surgical Global Outreach program, in partnership with The Shalom Foundation, provides critical care to children who are living in some of the world’s poorest conditions. This year, healthcare professionals from Dell Children’s Medical Center will travel to The Moore Pediatric Surgery Center in Guatemala City where the team will work together with local Guatemalan medical professionals.

This month’s trip will be Dr. Seremetis’ third time with DCSGO.

“This was a goal I had ever since I went to medical school,” explained Dr. Seremetis. “It is our responsibility to try to help out in any area of the world that does not have the ability or capability to take care of these children. I feel very happy and fortunate to be in a place in my life and my career to give back.”

Dr. Sweeney is traveling with DCSGO for the first time; however, it is not her first experience with medical mission work.

“This kind of trip reminds me why I wanted to pursue medicine. To see the conditions that these families live in and to understand the lack of resources they have access to is truly heartbreaking,” said Dr. Sweeney. “We often take for granted our accessibility to health care and to see the lack of resources in the rest of the world is humbling. I participated in medical mission work in Africa during my fellowship and it was unbelievably rewarding.”
